에릭 클랩튼은 솔로 활동을 시작하면서 ‘정통’ 블루스를 멀리했다.

오히려 달콤하게 팝이 가미된 ‘변형’ 블루스를 선호했다.

이 때문에 블루스를 변질시켰다는 비난을 받아야만했다.

클랩튼 자신도 이를 인정하며 어린 시절 즐겨듣던 올드 스쿨 블루스로 돌아가고 싶어했다.

이 앨범탄생 배경이다.

클랩튼은 머디 워터스(Muddy Waters)의 ‘hoochie Coochie Man’,

프레디 킹(Freddie King)의 ‘Someday After Awhile (You`ll Be Sorry)’ 등

초기 블루스맨들의 곡들을 자신의 스타일로 완벽하게 소화해냈다.

힘이 잔뜩 들어간 일렉트릭 기타와 울림이 큰 목소리는 클랩튼의 진면목이다.
